The Most Holy Trinity (Written on the Feast of the Trinity)

Tomorrow we celebrate the solemny of the Most Holy Trinity…..
If I was to say that there are 4 people in my family. A mother, a father, my sister and myself. You’d say that i’m describing the individuals in the family. Which I would say exactly correct, they are the people that make up my family.
If I was to say that we were one family, you would say yes, this is true, because I’m describing the big picture. The whole.
The essence is the same with the Trinity. When we say “We believe in one God ” in the Nicene Creed, we are describing the whole God, the fact that one God exists, not the persons that make up the Trinity
God the Father reveals himself in the OT Ex 3, 14 (The Bible was not revealed in Chronological Order). Basically he gives much instruction in the OT (Deut, Leviticus). We can say really that God the Father is much more of a an instructor than anything. (I mean for reals, all those laws, it’s amazing..). He also serves as someone who does Justice (Pharoh, Assyrians, the stories go on)
God the Son is revealed in Is 7, 14 “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The Virgin is with child and bears a son and calls his name Immanuel” Immanuel litteraly translates God is with us. It’s been said that the Greek text was an older translation of the original Hebrew text. In the Greek text, the word virgin is used in Is 7, 14. The Jews understood this as the prophecy of the Messiah. In the Gospel according to St. Matthew 1, 23, he quotes Is 7, 14. The Son of God, is a servant as we know from the prophecies in Is 42; 51. Jesus during his ministry identifies himself as God (Jn 10, 30-33; 8:58; 5:17-18). He gives the 12 instruction, he comes as fullfilment of the Law. We see him do many miracles, give very hard teachings, and he is our Pascal Sacrafice (1 Cor 5:7-8).
God the Holy Spirit is a NT revelation. We mostly see it in St. John’s Gospel (Jn 14, 16-20; 15, 26-27). We also see in the great commission Matt 28, 18-20, that Jesus tells us to baptize people in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The Cousoler, the Advocate that helped the apostles remember things. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, in 5, 1-4, we see that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God. We also know that blasphemying against the Holy Spirit is unforgiven. (St. Matthew 12).
We see that the 3 persons of God have different roles. However, they are 1 God. As we know, people in families have different roles, the same in the Most Holy Trinity. God the Father Loves God the Son so much, that the manifestation of that love is the Holy Spirit. As we say “We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. with the Fahter and the Son He is Worshiped and Glorified”
The Holy Trinity is the definiton of Love, a mystery of our Faith, and something that we hope to participate in when we are in worship in heaven.
Amen!
